The documents to hand over
The registration certificate, issued in two parts since 2013: part 1 that travels with the bike and part 2 that you keep at home. Both must go to the buyer, otherwise they cannot register the bike in their name.
The European certificate of conformity (COC) or, for an older bike, the Belgian certificate of conformity. Without it registration gets complicated and the buyer knows it: a missing COC lowers the price.
The service book and invoices. They are not compulsory, but they are worth money. Add the spare key, the coded key and the manual if you have them.
Unlike cars, motorcycles in Belgium have no periodic roadworthiness test and no Car-Pass. There is no inspection to pass before selling.
The plate stays with you
In Belgium the number plate belongs to the holder, not to the vehicle. You remove it before handing over the bike. The buyer then registers the bike in their name with their own plate.
Two options for your plate: transfer it to your next motorcycle, or return it to the DIV through a post office. Until the plate is cancelled or transferred you remain liable for road tax and insurance. Do not delay: cancellation is free and takes minutes.
Insurance and road tax
Tell your insurer on the day of the sale. The policy is cancelled or moved to your new vehicle, and the premium already paid is refunded pro rata.
Road tax works the same way: once the plate is cancelled, the overpayment for the remaining months is refunded automatically. There is nothing to apply for.
Something in writing, even short
Draw up a sale document in two copies, signed by both parties, with the date, time, buyer’s identity, mileage, price and the words “sold as seen, tested and accepted”. It is your proof in case of a fine, a claim or a dispute after the sale.
With a professional buyer this document is provided and signed on the spot, together with proof of payment.
Payment: the only real source of trouble
Scams in private sales almost all revolve around payment: fake transfer, fake bank confirmation e-mail, stolen cheque, a “courier” collecting the bike before payment. The rule is simple: the bike does not move until the money is in your account, checked in your own banking app and not on the buyer’s screen.
